This group is an Egyptian – Sudanese music formation, established in 2005 especially for the Euro-Mediterranean World Festival of the Anna Lindh Foundation. The work of Sandaleya is based on a solid musical tradition and an open, modern treatment of it.
Musicians from Egypt and from Sudan were chosen to perform together and to represent the uniting element in their musical heritage. One such common element is the focus on the vocal performance that dates back to ancient forms of musical recitation. Southern Egyptian music has a tone and formation similar to the music of the northern, western and central Sudanese regions.
The lyrics of “Al Aris” (“the groom”) are by Mohammed Abdel Rehim, sung here by Salma el Assal and Hassan el Soghaiar.
