we are proud to share with you our last publishing “FOLK LIFE IN UPPER EGYPT” (1978-1982) by Giovanni Canova part 2
thank you in advance for sharing this links with your friends..
Of the women’s household activities, food preparation is the most important. The grinding of cereals for fodder and bread-making are illustrated here. In Upper Egypt, bread is known as ‘esh (‘life’) shamsi (from shams ‘sun’). After leavening, which takes place thanks to the heat of the sun, the loaves are formed into different shapes: three-cornered if the family is Muslim or four-cornered if it is Christian. The film also shows the ceremonies of the seventh day (subu‘) performed to ward off evil spirits and the evil eye from new-born children. Children’s games and dances imitating those of professional dancers are also shown.
